What is Google Bard?

Artificial intelligence technology is growing in an exponential speed. It is arguable that it has great potentials but there could be a downside. Nevertheless, the private and public sectors are looking to maximize their profits by using this new and emerging technology.

What is Google Bard?

Google’s Bard is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot that is powered by LaMDA. It gets its geeky name based on the search engine giant’s marketing strategies. This platform is able to accept prompts and conduct text-based tasks such as giving answers to questions or creating content. It can summarize information that can be found on the internet and provide links to explore websites with additional information.

This new technology was launched after ChatGPT was released by OpenAI last year. ChatGPT is also a revolutionary technology that can help users search for information and create content. Bard is considered a new experiment for the tech giant which is trying to compete with the new trend. In fact, Google Bard was created in about forty-seven days. LaMDA is considered a large language model trained on datasets which include public communications and internet data. It is said that LaMDA can achieve a certain safety level by tuning it with information that’s annotated by crowd workers. It also factually grounds itself with external knowledge sources like an information retrieval system, language translator, and calculator. Google’s technology can evaluate the LaMDA outputs by evaluating whether a response is sensible, specific, and interesting. Google seems to plan to have Bard become an artificial intelligence feature in search by making the following announcement: “Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner. These new AI features will begin rolling out on Google Search soon.” So, it seems to be intended to be a search feature and not a replacement.

It is said that at least one Google employee asked the following question during a company meeting: “Why do we think the big first application should be search, which at its heart is about finding true information?” And, in response, the product lead said: “I just want to be very clear: Bard is not search.” Hence, it seems the tech giant is claiming that Bard is an interactive method for exploring topics.

Google is accepting new users to test Bard’s platform since it’s still in the experiment phase. The tech giant claims that Bard will not always get it right and it will get better with user feedback.

In short, according to Wikipedia, Bard is a conversational artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Google, based on the LaMDA family of large language models. It was developed as a direct response to the rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and was released in a limited capacity to lukewarm responses. You may access it by visiting https://bard.google.com/?hl=en.
