Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence is here and will continue to grow across various industries. This type of technology allows intelligent machines to think like humans and take over human-like tasks. The fact that intelligent machines can conduct human-like tasks such as answer phone calls, quickly analyze complex information, drive vehicles, or fly airplanes – is a remarkable phenomenon.

What is ChatGPT?

Wikipedia has described ChatGPT (a/k/a “Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer”) as an artificial-intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI which was launched last year. It is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 families of large language models and has been fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. This technology allows having natural conversations with users. So, in other words, it’s an intelligent chatbot that can assist with automating chat tasks. It can answer questions and assist the user with writing emails, essays, and software programs. It’s the fastest growing application of all time according to analysts since it had 100 million active users two months after being launched.  The application can be accessed by visiting chat.openai.com where users can create their accounts. Then, once you create the account, you can start your conversation and ask questions.

The new platform has also been used to create an app, write code, build resumes, write excel formulas, summarize content, or write books. It works by processing a significant amount of information such as books, articles, and other resources. It is different from a search engine because it does more than help users find information. There are certain limitations with the technology that should be addressed by its programmers. For example, it cannot answer questions that are worded in a certain manner so it will require rewording the question. It may also submit verbose answers which may not make complete sense.

ChatGPT’s data is limited to 2021 so it cannot answer questions about who won a sports tournament in 2022 or thereafter. It does not provide the sources for its answers which could create a problem when writing a book, essay, or article.

What are the pros and cons?

The proponents of this technology like it because it could enhance efficiency in various tasks. The opponents of this technology say that it can deteriorate the human mind – i.e., human intelligence – which is a valid argument because it circumvents human involvement. It is quite possible that it helps avoid the human learning process. So, it enables students to cheat when writing essays or homework.

ChatGPT has the ability to make our lives easier and everyday tasks easier. But, since the dissemination of misinformation is possible at this point, the technology must be enhanced. Even though the technology is new, it yields impressive capabilities such as passing an MBA exam with flying colors according to Wharton Business School’s professors. It will be used for social media websites as there are plans to integrate the technology with Snapchat. Microsoft was one of the first investors in OpenAI, which is the research company behind the platform.

The market will allow other companies to compete with OpenAI’s technologies. Google has launched “Google Bard” which is its new chat service to compete with ChatGPT. Google Bard uses a different version of Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (“LaMDA”) and extracts information from the internet unlike ChatGPT which does not have access to the internet.
